ST. MARY’S RECOGNIZED AS A TOP EMPLOYER
St. Mary's General Hospital has been selected as one of the 15 Top Employers for 2010 in Waterloo Region and Guelph Area.
This regional distinction comes as a result of an application by St. Mary’s to the Canada's Top 100 Employers Competition, conducted by Mediacorp Canada Inc.
Over 2,600 companies from across Canada applied and, based on the SMGH submission and Mediacorp’s independent research, we were made the initial list of 300 companies. This is an impressive showing for our first entry into the competition!
Top Employers in designated regions across Canada were then selected from this short list. Selections are based on a number of criteria including: physical environment, work atmosphere and communications, employee compensation and benefits, training and development, diversity, environmental leadership and community involvement.
Here are some highlights from the application by St. Mary’s:
- Has redeveloped more than 100,000 square feet of our facility over the past five years;
- Helps employees plan for retirement with retirement planning assistance, phased-in retirement work options and a defined benefit pension plan, with employer contributions to 7% of salary;
- Assists employees who are new mothers with maternity top-up payments (to 84% for 15 weeks);
- Provides a parental leave top-up payment (to 84% for 10 weeks ) for new fathers and adoptive parents;
- Recognizes previous work experience when setting vacation entitlements for newly recruited older employees;
- Has won provincial innovation awards for our Neighbourhood Market and Code STEMI programs;
- Conducts an International Outreach Program in Sudan;
- Partners with the Ministry of Health to help nurses who are later in their career spend time in less physically demanding roles, such as teaching or mentoring.
